Pathing
How a respondent is routed through a survey
The route a respondent takes through a survey is commonly referred to as the path. Planning the path a respondent takes through the survey is helpful to ensure you are getting the correct data from the correct audience.
One helpful technique for visualizing the respondent's path is a survey schematic. Here's an example:
![]() |
In the Screening Section of your survey based on the answers given a respondent will qualify for a pathway in your survey. In IncQuery this is usually setup with True/False variables, True if the respondent qualifies for that path and False if they do not. Depending on the setup a respondent might qualify for multiple paths. What you have to consider is the overall number of questions a single respondent is going to see to prevent survey fatigue.
Exit Path
Illustrated by Path C in the schematic above, an Exit Path is a route through the survey where the respondent is going to answer a few additional questions then be terminated from the survey. This is typically done for non-users or non-decision makers where some data is needed. Any pre-planned exit pathway in a survey must be under 15 questions at the most or panel providers will push back against this type of setup.
